Meladine finishes off the little ones!

Meladine can be used prior to using any home laser hair removal product such as the Silk’n or Rio x60. Meladine has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA as an “Accessory to a Surgical Laser treatments used for Hair Removal”. Meladine is a not a drug, but a lotion that is sprayed onto the area that requires treatment. It has also been registered with the FDA as a cosmetic preparation. Meladine’s ingredients are natural, non-toxic and hypo-allergenic.

Meladine needs to be applied prior to each laser treatment. The suggested time differs depending on which type of hair you have.

Meladine is best absorbed into the hair when just after shaving. In fact, it is recommended that the area be shaved daily for optimal absorption. It is important to apply Meladine as instructed for optimal results. Keep in mind that the goal of using Meladine is to create a melanin deposit that is dark enough to be effectively targeted by the laser hair removal products. If several applications are missed, you may consider adding more applications or extending the Meladine treatment for several days in order to make up for the number of treatments missed

After applying Meladine, you need to wait about an hour before showering or putting on any other types of lotion. Meladine is colorless and dries without any lingering odor. You need to keep the skin clean and free of any other types of creams or lotions, which may affect absorption of Meladine.

One bottle contains approximately 720 sprays, which may be enough to cover several pre-treatment regimens for a lip or chin, but may only cover one pre-treatment regimen for a full face. You will require more than one bottle for treating larger areas such as the legs.

The amount of Meladine used will depend on the type of hair to be treated, the size of the area to be treated and personal preference. Coarse hair will require longer application time. Some people think that a thicker application is better and may use Meladine more liberally when applying.

Meladine does not stain the skin or change the appearance of hair above the surface of the skin.

Silk'n fares better in all fields.

Tria uses a Diode Laser and Silk’n uses Intense pulse light (IPL) technology to permanently remove unwanted hair. Both methods have been used by the medical profession for over 20 years. The effectiveness of each method has also been researched and debated by practitioners, manufacturers and scientists who have accepted that results are roughly the same with both types of epilation (epilating is a term referring to the removal of the entire hair from the root).

Both laser and IPL methods of hair removal have also been known as phototricholysis or photoepilation. However they are now more commonly and collectively referred to as “laser hair removal”.

The Silk’n IPL unit has a flash lamp which discharges an extremely intense, full spectrum white light for a very short duration to an area 2cm x 3cm. The Tria uses a Diode laser to target a spot area 1cm x 1cm.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved hair removal lasers in 1997 for permanent hair reduction with a disclaimer that each unit’s effectiveness is directly dependant upon the skill of the operator and the laser technology used in treatment.

The strength of each unit is directly dependent on three variables, namely:-

Output Wavelength: It has been observed that longer pulse widths may be safer for darker skin. However, shorter wavelengths may be more effective at removing hair. The Tria and the Silk’n have roughly equivalent wavelength levels.  The Tria’s wavelength is 810 nanometres (nm) and the Silk’n ranges from 600 to 1100nm.

Treatment Size: The spot size, or the width of the laser beam, affects treatment. The Tria has a treatment area the size of a fingertip (8-12 mm). It is clear that larger spot sizes help make treatments faster and more effective. The Silk’n has a larger treatment area of 2cm x 3cm.

Fluence/Energy Level: The Fluence or energy level is another important factor in laser strength for hair removal products. Fluence is measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm²). The Tria has a fluence level between 7 and 20 j/cm². The Silk’n has a fluence level of 5j/cm². Although the Silk’n has a lower energy level it can emit this level to an area six times bigger than the Tria.

Other considerations which assist effective treatment include repetition. There is a 3.5 second wait between pulses with the Silk’n and a very small millisecond gap for the Tria. Both repetition rates are perfectly acceptable.

Also overlapping the same target area can bring an improvement in the heating of an area. Tria advise overlapping when undertaking a treatment and Silk’n advise that no overlapping is required.

Before deciding on which home laser hair removal unit you should buy out of the three main competitors, i.e. the Tria, Silk’n and Rio x 60 laser hair removal units you need to compare the area each device can treat and how many shots (or laser beams) it would take to treat a certain area. Here at so-smooth we want you to be well informed and happy with your purchase and as such we are hoping to provide you with as much information as possible before you decide which home laser home removal unit is best suited to your needs.

Over the past few weeks we have scrutinised our products and as such are able to provide you with accurate non biased informative article. The Tria’s treatment area is about 1cm x 1cm, the Rio x60 treatment area is just less than 1cm squared (0.85cm x 0.5cm) and the Silk’n boasts a massive 2cm x 3cm treatment area.

With the Tria you need to overlap each shot by around 4mm to obtain the maximum benefit from the product. In the Tria instruction leaflet we are told that it takes about 50 shots to treat each 3cm x 3cm area. They go on to say that this would take about 90 seconds. Although the laser beam emits at a fantastically fast speed the time it takes time to move the Tria from one area to the next, and there is a small amount of time between each laser pulse. The Rio laser x60 also requires a certain amount of overlapping to achieve maximum hair reduction. The Rio x60 advises an overlap of around 3mm. The Rio x60 device has a very helpful attachment which makes an indentation on your skin so that you can see which area has been treated and how much needs to be overlapped before moving and administering a second shot. The Rio x60 booklet suggests that to treat an area of around 3cm x 3cm you would require approximately 10 shots.

The Silk’n requires no overlapping at all, in fact the instruction manual advises against any overlapping. The silk’n with its very large treatment area can treat an area 2cm x 3cm in one single shot. If this calculation was made comparable to the Trio and Rio x 60 the Silk’n would only need approximately 1.23 shots for the same area that the Tria takes 50 shots doing and the Rio x 60 takes approximately 10 shots to do.

Treating hairs this way has a high success rate with long lasting results. By undertaking laser hair removal at home you will save on salon fees. However you may never have afforded salon fees in the first place so these products bring the possibility of permanent hair reduction to a wider audience than ever before.

We all must understand that home laser hair removal can be a slow process requiring repeated treatments for long lasting and effective results. This is no slower than going to a salon. The time it takes to permanently remove unwanted hair is due to the hair growth cycle which I will cover in a future article. However when deciding on a hair removal product one of the first things to consider is the speed at which the Rio x 60 (sometimes known as the Rio laser x 60, Tria or Silk’n can treat an area. In this case what needs to be considered and compared is how quickly each of these products can emit their pulse.

The Rio x 60, Tria home laser hair removal unit and Silk’n all emit their lasers at different speeds. The Rio x 60 laser emits a pulse for anywhere between 5 seconds and 75 seconds depending on what strength is used to treat an area. In the x60 mode the laser will run for 5 seconds on the lowest power level and up to 75 seconds on the highest level. In the x20 mode it takes 6 seconds on the lowest setting and 25 seconds on the highest. A Tria’slaser shot is delivered at a staggering speed of 125 to 600 ms. However as you will find out later speed isn’t everything! The Silkn laser shot takes about a second with an acceptable 3.5 second wait between each shot. This comparison would indicate that the Tria or Silkn would be a better choice due to a faster pulse rate, however this is not everything that needs to be looked at.
