Silk'n Silk'n Laser

I have been using my Silk’n laser for about five months now.  All in all I think I’ve completed four full treatments on my leg and bikini line area.  I tend to do one full leg one week and then my other leg or bikini line the following week.  I don’t have a rigid routine because I don’t have time.

I’m on my second replacement bulb which I bought on offer about a month ago.  So I’ve used four bulbs in total since using the Silk’n.   I’ve been storing my silk’n in my wardrobe and using it about once a month properly.  I’m very lazy in my beauty routine so will admit to being slightly less enthusiastic at spending 15 minutes Zapping my legs and bikini line.  However for the sake of being hair free I have persisted.

On the whole the results are quite promising.  My left leg, (for some reason) is far less hairy than my right leg.  Maybe I did that leg twice by mistake.  On average I would say that at least 50% of the hairs on my leg had two hairs that came out from one follicle.  I know that’s not actually the case but the pattern of hair on my legs appeared to be in pairs.  This has stopped altogether.  The density of hair on my legs is far less than about six months ago.  The only way I can give some sort of evidence for this is with the amount of razors I buy.  I normally go through one packet of intuition a month.  That is a replacement pack of three razor cartridges.  Intuition razors are the ones with the soap surrounding the razor.

Anyway, for the last two months I have only gone through two cartridges in two months.  So that’s four cartridges less than I normally use over two months.

I’ve tried to avoid using my Philips epilator because I wanted to give the silk’n a good chance at working.  However now that the hair is much lighter and finer and some of it has even gone I think I will use my very new and shiny Philips epilator just to have a break from shaving.  My epilator is very new and shiny because it was far too painful to use before, even with the picnic icepack that I used to press against the skin before using.

All in all I would say that the silk’n requires commitment and is the perfect opportunity to remove unwanted hair in the comfort of my own home at minimal expense.  I know new products are coming out all of the time so I’m glad I’ve bought mine when I did so that I can have the benefits of being hair free before others did.

Waxing

Leg waxing involves using either hot wax or a hot sugar solution similar to syrup. Once applied to the leg or bikini area in a thin layer the wax cools down and contracts. This contraction of the wax makes the thin layer cling to the hair which gives enough strength in the wax to pull out the entire hair from the root. Some salons use a Tee Tree solution but this tends to snap the hair from the surface rather than pull the hair out from the root. (Depilate rather than Epilate!).

If you are waxing your legs yourself at home I would suggest heating the wax as recommended and allowing the wax to cool slightly after application.

If you are using waxing strips you need to heat the wax strips up in your hand by rubbing your hands together with the wax strip inbetween.  Separate the wax strips (there are always two stuck together).  Once separated apply the wax strip to the area you want to wax.  Move your hand  away for a few seconds so that the wax cools slightly and then quickly remove the wax strip.

Waxed legs last for about 3 to 6 weeks depending on your own individual hair growth cycle. Some people report that hair is finer after continually waxing for over a two year period, however there is no evidence to suggest that waxing does reduce hair density.

One reader wrote in with their horror story involving leg waxing. The beauty therapist was just on the last part of the leg waxing session where they create a ball of wax to eliminate the last few stragglers of hair. Unfortunately the wax was too hot and it burnt the skin. The wax left a scar about the size of an old fifty pence piece on the back of her leg. The burn took over six weeks to heal after many many applications of emollient cream.

Silk'n Laser Hair | Simply flash the hair away

The new Tria laser (released February 2009), Rio x 60 and Silk’n all emit laser pulses to permanently remove unwanted hair. Tria takes about 90 seconds to emit around 50 shots. The total number of shots in the new Tria’s lifetime is around 90,000 shots. After this time the Tria needs to be returned to the manufacturer for recycling or thrown away.

Using all the 90,000 shots in a Tria would take 90,000/50 multiplied by 90 seconds (162500 seconds, 2700 minutes) this equals about 45 hours worth of treatment. However you must remember that the Tria needs up to 8 hours worth of charging (with fan off) for each session of 300 shots. When you take this into consideration the total treatment time increases tenfold. If you look at the Tria Vs Silk’n treatment area comparison article you will see that you can treat an area 61cm x 61cm during a Tria’s lifetime.

The Silk’n takes 3.5 seconds for one shot. The Silk’n does not need to be charged and can work continuously. Therefore it would take each Silk’n bulb 44 minutes to emit all of its shots. Each Silk’n sold in the UK comes with two treatment bulbs which would give a total of 88 minutes worth of treatment time. If you look at the Tria Vs Silk’n treatment area comparison article you will see that you can treat an area of 42cm x 42 cm with each bulb.  You can then purchase another bulb for approximately £45.00 and continue treatment.

So in summary it would take over 45 hours with a Tria to treat an area just over 61 cm long x 61 cm wide and 88 minutes for a Silk’n to treat two blocks of 42 cm x 42cm.
